The Museum of America
The Museum of America was created by Government Decree in 1941 with the purpose of assembling collections of American archeology and ethnology, so that they could be known, admired and studied not only by researchers, but by the general public, in an attractive and understandable way.
The Museum's thematic covers an extended period that goes from American prehistory to the present, with special emphasis on pre-Columbian archeology, ethnography and colonial art.
The Treasure of the Quimbayas, unique set in the world, is preserved in the Museum of America thanks to the generosity of the Colombian government who offered it to the Spanish Crown in 1892, as a present for the IV Centenario del Encuentro, and to thank for the Spanish mediation in a dispute for boders between Venezuela and Colombia.
Located near Madrid's Moncloa metro station, in a beautiful setting surrounded by gardens, the Museum of America is located in a magnificent historicist building from the middle of last century.
